Butler County's great daily newspaper

Citizens should demand answers about war

The Butler Eagle’s report on the “drastic and uncommon” gas spike at a Center Township Sheetz should make one thing clear: the Iran war is no longer a distant foreign-policy debate. It is already on Butler County’s receipts.

The danger is not only higher gasoline. It is escalation: more U.S. troops exposed around the Gulf, more shipping disruption, more pressure for a ground role most Americans oppose, and a higher risk of retaliatory violence or cyber disruption at home. The Eagle has also reported that the U.S. military has widened efforts beyond the blockade of Iranian ports. That is how limited wars become larger ones by inches, then by emergency.

Residents here can support our troops without supporting a blank check for war. Our representatives should demand public answers: What is the mission? What prevents a ground invasion? How are troops protected? What is the plan for fuel, food and inflation if the Strait of Hormuz closes again?

Butler County families should not be asked to pay a war tax at the pump and then be told not to ask questions.

Mayor, Seven Fields
