Butler man alleges he was bitten by police K-9 during traffic stop, department disputes claim
A Butler man is alleging an Adams Township police K-9 bit him during a June 28, 2025, traffic stop while at his Wednesday, April 15, preliminary hearing.
Adams Township police said the K-9 never left the police vehicle.
Logan Robert Maher, 29, was in police custody for six hours following a traffic stop on Route 228. He’s charged with two felony counts of aggravated assault, felony escape, two misdemeanor counts each of DUI and resisting arrest, and misdemeanor disorderly conduct.
District Judge Amy Marcinkiewicz held all charges for court.
Maher lifted his pant leg to show the court two dark circles on his calf where he alleges he was bitten by the K-9 during the traffic stop. Maher said he was positioned against the officer’s vehicle, and the dog bit him in the leg before he was forced to the ground.
Maher said the dog was a German shepherd, but he did not see its color since it was dark at the time of the incident. He said he did not tell doctors about the dog when officers took him for treatment because he was intimidated by the number of officers present.
He said he sought care independently after being released and has documentation he was treated for a dog bite, along with photos.
Assistant district attorney Laura Pitchford objected to the apparent injury and argued that testimony wasn’t relevant at the preliminary stage. However, Marcinkiewicz allowed Maher to continue.
Officer Christopher Kopas testified the K-9 was at the scene but never left the vehicle. He said Maher “100% never interacted with our K-9 in any capacity.”
Kopas said Maher was combative throughout the six hours he was in custody after pulling over on the left side in a construction zone.
Defense attorney Armand Cingilani added Maher sustained a laceration to his face and bruise to his temple, but Kopas wasn’t sure exactly when during the incident that may have occurred. He said police used appropriate force throughout the incident.
Maher’s formal arraignment is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. June 1 in Butler County Common Pleas Courtroom 1.
