Casteel shines in win over North Allegheny: Roundup

Kyle Casteel struck out 11 batters and Jacob Szebalskie had a pair of hits and a save as Butler downed North Allegheny 5-3 on the road on Thursday.

Nolan Stefaniak added a triple and Mavrik Clement a double as the Golden Tornado improved to 7-2 on the season (4-1 in WPIAL Section 1-6A play).

Mars 11, Beaver 1 — Zachary Hugus allowed two hits over five innings on the mound, allowing one unearned run for the Planets. Grady Speigle had two hits, two RBIs and scored two runs.

Knoch 10, Highlands 0 — Hunter Lang allowed just one hit over five innings, striking out nine, while Kaden Dreher, Dylan Roth, Carter Beres and Kyle Morgan had two RBIs each.

Slippery Rock 11, Wilmington 1 — Parker Dalcamo hit a two-run homer for the Rockets, who improved to 2-1 and face Sharon on the road on Friday.

Union/A-C Valley 17, North Clarion 2 — Trent Fleming and Connor Langdon had four RBIs apiece in the Falcon Knights’ decisive victory.

Softball

Clare Kotwica rung up 15 strikeouts and Mary Kotwica and Dakota Hicks both had three hits as North Catholic downed Western Beaver 10-0 in six innings.

Hickory 5, Slippery Rock 1 — Sophia Lawrence and Lillian Campbell had hits, with the former’s being a double, in the Rockets’ loss.

Flag football

Lizzie Fabian had a rushing touchdown, a touchdown grab and a pick-six as North Catholic downed Deer Lakes 34-6. Gabby Valentine had three touchdown passes.

North Hills 13, Mars 12 — Miley Gratton and Arianna Rhedrick both scored touchdowns and MiKayla Ostermann had an interception in the Planets’ loss.

Boys tennis

North Catholic senior Justin Garvey downed Greensburg Salem’s Silas Morris 6-2, 6-1 to earn a PIAA Class 2A singles berth. Garvey, the WPIAL’s No. 4 seed, was booted into the consolations to face Morris, the No. 2 seed, in a semifinal loss to eventual district champion Max Henson.

Seneca Valley 3, North Catholic 2 — Gianni Varlotta had a singles win and the pairings of Liam Schley and Kylan Meiers and Jackson Brandt and Trent Gordon were also victorious for the Raiders (6-1).

Butler 3, Knoch 2 — Ryan Conaway and Landin Schooley had solo triumphs, while Jeremy Schreffer and Anthony Stoops won in doubles.

Track and field

Seneca Valley’s boys remained undefeated, moving to 4-0 with a 103-46 win over North Hills. The Raiders’ girls, meanwhile, sit at the same mark after beating the Indians 111-38.

Slippery Rock (girls) 115, Sharon 34; Slippery Rock 113, Greenville 37; Slippery Rock 140, Sharpsville 10 — Rhenna Humphrey won both hurdles events, while Leah Perez won the 3,200 and was part of the winning 4x800 relay.

Boys volleyball

North Catholic downed Mars in straight sets, by scores of 25-14, 25-23 and 25-13.

Seneca Valley 3, Moon 0 — No further details were available for the Raiders’ win.
