Butler softball blows past Mt. Lebanon, Karns City baseball rolls, North’s Garvey can medal at WPIALs: Roundup
Kaylin Garbinski was 3-for-3 at the plate, including two doubles, and tallied three RBIs in Butler softball’s 9-2 win Wednesday against visiting Mt. Lebanon.
Mikayla Crouch pitched five innings for the win. She teamed with Kyra Olivares to limit the Blue Devils to two runs on six hits.
Alaina Garbinski added two hits and three RBIs for the Golden Tornado.
Seneca Valley 13, Pine-Richland 10 — Despite getting out-hit 12-6, the Raiders used a six-run sixth inning to overtake the Rams.
Paige Volz hit a home run, singled twice and had six RBIs for SV.
North Catholic 6, Beaver 3 — Behind 15 strikeouts from Kennedy Brown and two hits and two RBIs from her at the plate, the Trojanettes downed the Bobcats.
Plum 10, Mars 0 — Alyson Mazurek doubled and singled twice for the Planets.
Karns City’s bats produced 17 hits, including four apiece from Colton Christie and Joey O’Donnell, as the Gremlins traveled to Jefferson County and thumped Brockway 21-8.
Christie and Tyson Frazer both scored four runs, and O’Donnell’s four RBIs were topped only by teammate Xavier Bartoe, who drove in five.
Ben Yale homered and doubled for the Rovers.
Freeport 6, Mars 3 — The Yellowjackets made the most of their five hits — and three Mars errors — to improve to 8-0 on the season.
Gavin Tola singled and scored three runs for Freeport. Ashton Bricker and Trey Schreckengost both drove in two runs in support of winning pitcher Gage Blystone.
Carson Fowkes and Danny Murray both had three of Mars’ eight hits.
Knoch 3, Highlands 1 — Senior pitcher Zane Pacek struck out eight, walked none and allowed just the one run on four hits to earn the victory.
Cooper Allison tallied two hits, including a double, and scored twice for the Knights. Dylan Roth added a pair of base hits and two RBIs.
Hopewell 11, North Catholic 0 — Vikings’ pitcher Kingston Krotec shut out the Trojans on four hits.
Grove City 4, Slippery Rock 3 — The Eagles plated two runs in the bottom of the seventh to top the Rockets.
Two of Doug Popovec’s three hits were doubles for Slippery Rock.
North Catholic senior Justin Garvey will be playing for third place in WPIAL Class 2A Thursday after reaching the semifinals of the district’s singles tournament.
The No. 4 seed, Garvey had little trouble defeating Central Valley’s Hunter Hazelwood (10-1) and Frazier’s Nolan Taucher (10-3) to reach the semis, where he was defeated by top-seeded Max Henson of Belle Vernon in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3.
Henson’s first-round victory came against Garvey’s teammate, Alex Weber, who withdrew from the tournament.
Garvey will face Greensburg Salem’s Silas Morris in the consolation match at North Allegheny. The winner will advance to the PIAA tournament.
Logan Skibiniski won both the 100 and 200 meters and Nick Ielase the 100- and 300-meter hurdles, but Union/A-C Valley’s boys team bowed to Cranberry Area 88-62.
In the girls meet, Maddy Dehart was tops in the shot put, discus and javelin, but the Falcon Knights fell to the Berries 74-66.
Karns City sweeps Redbank Valley — Mason Bell, Owen Kaufman and Carter Farren all ran a leg on the Gremlins’ winning 4x800 and 4x400 relay teams in KC’s 78-72 win over the Bulldogs.
KC’s girls defeated Redbank 94-56. Nicole Huff won the 800, and helped the Gremlins place first in the 4x800 and 4x400 relays.
