Butler track’s Nicco Baggetta breaks javelin record; Knoch softball rolls to win: Roundup

Nicco Baggetta now holds Butler’s javelin record.

The Golden Tornado junior launched it 197 feet, 6 inches on his third and final throw in victories during a tri-meet against Shaler (143-7) and Pine-Richland (99-51) on Monday. The meet was hosted at Shaler’s stadium.

Baggetta had already broken the record on his second throw (197-0), which beat Harold Dunn Jr.’s mark of 191-11, set in 2006.

Butler moved to 5-0 as Carter Ekas bettered his time in the 200 meters (22.18), which ranks second all-time in program history.

Butler (girls) 97, Pine-Richland 53; Butler 111, Shaler 39 — Macie McLister was part of the winning 4x800 and 4x400 relays and also earned first place in the 800 (2:26.58), as well.

Softball

Lizzie Danik, Emersyn Jones and Alena Tekely had multi-hit performances as Knoch downed Greensburg Salem 8-2. Jones had a pair of doubles, while Tekely added one more and Danik had a triple.

Kaila Purcell went 5.2 frames in the circle, striking out seven and walking two.

Shaler 15, Mars 0 — Callie Simoni had the Planets’ lone hit in the three-inning defeat.

Girls lacrosse

Macey Edwards had a stellar showing — netting seven goals and helping with another — as Freeport downed Winchester Thurston 15-6.

Sophia Glass helped out with a hat trick and three assists, while Jocelyn Jones added two markers.

Flag football

North Catholic moved to 5-1 with a 14-0 win over New Castle. Sarah Shay notched two interceptions in the victory, while Gabby Valentine threw touchdown passes to Ava Vangura and Mia Banaszak.
