Unpopular policies prompt letters
I often read in the Letters to the Editor section of this paper issues facing our nation oversimplified as being either Republican or Democrat. Do we all not want the same things for our families, friends and neighbors regardless of political affiliation?
Personally, I am a conservative Democrat and throughout my life have found common ground with Republican politicians, whether it be of social or economic substance. Policies of either party often shared the same goals but held a different approach to achieving those goals — i.e. No one wants illegal and criminal immigrants. But do we want U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement using brutal and illegal tactics, or doing unnecessary damage to places of business?
If the predominance of letters to the editor lean toward a particular party, this is the result of unpopular policies and rhetoric from a president and his administration seeking to divide rather than unite the citizens of our country.
I find simplifying our country’s divide by party is often done without research and fact-checking. While we now have a Republican administration and House and Senate majorities, we see a very different Republican Party under President Donald Trump that would, I feel, make Republican leaders of yesteryear roll over in their graves.
It is not the party that prompts letters to the editor, but instead unpopular policies, beginning with Trump’s limitations and an unqualified administrative staff willing to violate our nation’s laws and Constitution to achieve his goals.
