Dr. Edwin P. “Doc” Arnold, of Grove City, beloved husband, father, grandfather, educator and friend, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 16, 2026.

A lifelong champion of music education and a transformational figure at Grove City College, he leaves a legacy that shaped generations of students, educators and musicians, reflecting a deep commitment to faith, service and the development of others.

For countless Grove City College alumni, “Doc” Arnold was more than a professor — he was a mentor and a source of enduring inspiration. His career spanned nearly four decades, beginning in 1975 as director of bands. In 1981, he was appointed chairman of the Department of Music and Fine Arts, leading the program to new levels of excellence.

He served in senior leadership roles, including executive assistant to the president, vice president of external affairs, liaison to the Commission on Higher Education and director of the J. Howard Pew Fine Arts Center, where his vision left a lasting imprint, earning him the Florence E. MacKenzie Campus-Community Award in 1995.

Under his leadership, the music program grew significantly, earning a reputation for excellence in performance and preparing music educators. He believed deeply that music was about more than performance — it was about people, often reminding students that “music can sometimes be a very important byproduct of what we do.”

Dr. Arnold’s influence extended far beyond the classroom as a sought-after guest conductor and clinician nationwide. His honors included his election to the American Bandmasters Association (1995), his induction into the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association Hall of Fame (2020), the Henry N. Mancini Achievement Award, his induction into the Beaver Valley Musicians Hall of Fame (2013) and the Phi Beta Mu Lifetime Achievement Award (2023). In 2016, he conducted during the 75th anniversary Pearl Harbor remembrance ceremony in Honolulu. He was also deeply involved in his community.

He held memberships in professional organizations, including the National Band Association, Pennsylvania Music Educators Association, College Band Directors National Association and Phi Beta Mu; and he served as past president and longtime executive secretary-treasurer of the Pennsylvania Collegiate Bandmasters Association.

A native of Beaver Falls, Pa., he developed his lifelong passion for music alongside his wife, Ellen, known as “Mum” to generations of their students. He earned degrees from Geneva College and Duquesne University and his doctorate from the University of Houston.

Remembered for his personal impact, he invested in students and challenged them to reach their potential. Those who knew him best saw a soft but steady faith that shaped his life and work. A longtime member of Harmony Evangelical Presbyterian Church, he served as an elder.

He is survived by his wife, Ellen; his daughter, Erin, and her husband, Joseph M. Pisano; his son, Paul, and his wife, Heather (Busin); and five grandchildren, Joseph B., Jacob, Ethan, Annie and John.

ARNOLD — A celebration of life for Dr. Edwin P. “Doc” Arnold, who died Monday, March 16, 2026, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, April 12, at Harbison Chapel at Grove City College, 16 N. Campus Drive, Grove City, with a reception to follow.
