Karns City’s Alex Wilson breaks school record in pole vault, again: Roundup
Karns City junior Alex Wilson cleared 14 feet, 6 inches in the pole vault in Wednesday’s season-opening meet at Clarion-Limestone, breaking his previous school record by 3 inches.
The effort helped the Gremlins defeat Cranberry 86-64, though KC fell to Central Clarion 77-73.
KC’s Noah Weiland won the 3,200 with a time of 10:57, and Owen Kaufman the 400 (54.0) and triple jump (36-8.5).
Kolby Blair was a double-winner in the shot put (42-5.5) and discus (139-7.5).
Wilson placed third in the District 9 Class 2A pole vault last year before finishing fifth in the state with an effort of 14 feet at Shippensburg University in May.
Butler sweeps Fox Chapel and North Hills — Brendan Eicher took first place in the 1,600 (4:31.07) and 3,200 (9:34.83) as the Golden Tornado topped the host Foxes 126-24 and the Indians 102.5-47.5
Brady Dumbaugh captured the 110 hurdles (15.27) and 300 hurdles (41.70).
Other top efforts included Logan Ekas (100 meters, 11:03), Carter Ekas (200, 22:27), Landon Slear (800, 2:03.56), Jason Wick (pole vault, 14-9) and Nicco Baggetta (javelin, 179-1).
Butler also won all three relays.
On the girls side, Halle Swidzinski placed first in the long jump (15-11) and pole vault (11-0) to pace victories over Fox Chapel (86-64) and North Hills (107-43).
Rylee Blystone won the 100 in 12.93 and the 200 in 26.98.
Ava DeLorenzo was tops in the triple jump (33-10.5) and Gracyn Vardy in the high jump at 5-0.
Freeport improved to 4-0 with a 13-2 win over Mt. Pleasant thanks to a six-run sixth inning that ended with Luke Whitfield ripping a three-run home run to right field for the mercy rule.
Whitfield finished 2-for-3 with two runs and four RBIs, while Kason Barker went 2-for-2 with four runs, a triple, an RBI and two stolen bases.
Knoch 5, North Hills 0 — Knights ace Zane Pacek fired six shutout innings, fanning seven while allowing just two hits to improve the team to 3-1. Brady Linamen (2-for-2) doubled and scored twice.
Pine-Richland 11, Mars 6 — The Planets dropped their third straight to slip to 2-4 despite drawing nine walks in this one. Jameson Garvin and Carson Fowkes each scored two runs, with Garvin driving in two more.
Seneca Valley 3, Eden Christian 0 — Andrew Palano and Kayden Cahall combined for a three-hit shutout and struck out five batters total to improve the Raiders to 4-1. Mason Fisher (2-for-2) and Brandon Godleski (2-for-3) had big days at the plate — Fisher doubled and scored twice from the leadoff spot and Godleski knocked in two RBIs.
Emersyn Jones and Lizzie Danik each went yard in Knoch’s 4-3 win over Derry.
The Knights improved to 2-1 thanks to the bombs, with Jones’ being of the two-run variety. Marlee Fraser fired a complete game with 11 strikeouts.
Mars 16, Penn Hills 2 — The Planets won their first game of the season thanks to a combined eight doubles from five players. Tessa Simoni (4-for-4) had two of them and scored four times; Sophia Soltis (3-for-4) doubled once, drove in six and scored; and Alyssa Foltz (3-for-4) had a pair of two-baggers, three runs and two RBIs.
Indiana 8, Freeport 0 — Indiana pitcher Samantha Martin no-hit the Yellowjackets with a dominant 15-strikeout performance. Her only blemishes were three walks. Freeport fell to 1-1.
North Catholic 9, Ambridge 0 — Kennedy Brown was a force in this one, fanning 18 batters while allowing a single hit in a shutout performance in the circle. At the dish, she went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, two runs scored and one RBI.
Callihan Johnson beat Landin Schooley 6-0, 6-0 in Singles 1 action to help Mars complete the 5-0 sweep over Butler at Butler High School. Max Palmiero and Aarya Raut won the other singles matches in straight sets, too.
Pine-Richland 4, Seneca Valley 1 — Billy Conway won the Raiders’ only point in Singles 3, beating Eisen Faust 6-3, 6-7 (8-10), 1-0 (10-7).
North Catholic 3, Hampton 2 — Justin Garvey rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 win in Singles 1 over Jaxson Meyer. The Trojans swept the singles matches, with Alex Weber and Jake Sinclair pulling out wins.
