How surging Butler girls lacrosse smothered Seneca Valley for fourth consecutive win
BUTLER TWP — It’s official. Butler girls lacrosse is on a roll.
Wednesday’s 15-3 win over Seneca Valley at Art Bernardi Stadium was the Golden Tornado’s fourth victory in a row, a streak that has seen Butler outscore its opponents by a combined score of 55-17.
“We have great talent on offense,” first-year Tornado coach Abbie Roetering said. “The girls have been playing together for a while, and we don’t need a ton of plays to generate offense.”
Six players found the net against SV, paced by senior Taryn Hilovsky’s six goals. But in Monday’s win over Armstrong, Hilovsky was absent and sophomore midfielder Addison Pino led the way with four goals.
“We’re working together better this year because we’re more comfortable with each other,” said junior Izzy Skal, who scored twice Wednesday. “Addy and I are doing a good job near the crease, and Taryn is able to create a lot of opportunities in isolation.”
Pino, Hilovsky, Skal and Parker Slater combined for all of Butler’s goals in the first period, during which Butler put the rival Raiders in a 7-1 hole.
Reeve Swanson and Sofia Matonak (twice) also scored for Butler later in the game.
Roetering also lauded the team’s defense, which is led by senior captain Addyson Traggiai. Campbell Clouse, who stopped six shots against the Raiders, including two after SV was awarded free position, is back in net for the second straight season.
Over a month remains in the regular season, but the pieces seem to be in place for the Tornado (4-1) to improve on last year’s 11-7 record and first-round WPIAL playoff exit.
SV dropped to 0-2 with the defeat. The Raiders graduated seven starters from last year’s team, and according to coach Katie Smolter, 26 of the program’s 32 players are underclassmen.
Alaina Wencil (two goals) and Lily Zock accounted for the team’s three scores against Butler. Goalie Lilian Eaves made eight saves.
“It’s going to take a while for our younger players to catch up to the pace of the varsity game,” Smolter said. “But the want-to is there, and we see that fight in them. They are willing to learn and are like sponges. That’s a positive that we’re focusing on right now.”
Butler visits Knoch on Saturday while Seneca Valley hosts Allderdice on Monday.
