A bill to ensure volunteer fire and EMS personnel are covered by workers’ compensation when fundraising was approved unanimously by the state Senate Tuesday, March 24.
Senate Bill 1053, which was co-authored by state Sens. Scott Hutchinson, R-21st, and Tim Kearney, D-26th, is now headed to the state House for consideration.
A Commonwealth Court decision previously held that firefighters injured at a municipality-authorized activity or fundraiser were covered. The new bill would expressly provide workers’ compensation for volunteers at fundraising activities.
