Clarion man dies in I-80 crash

One man died in a three-vehicle crash involving a tractor-trailer Wednesday morning, March 18, on I-80 in Mercer County, according to the county coroner.

Coroner John A. Libonati said the unidentified 81-year-old man from Clarion died accidentally of blunt force trauma to the head and chest due to the crash. The coroner did not release the man’s identity Wednesday because the next of kin had not been notified.

The crash occurred at 9:38 a.m. on I-80 near Bethel-Wilmington Road in Shenango Township, state police said.

Carlos A. Valdivia Perez, 26, of New Jersey, and Wilner W. Dompierre, 50, of New York, were also injured in the crash and transported to a Mercy Health – St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital in Ohio.

Police said the three drivers were traveling on I-80 when Valdivia Perez struck the rear of the 81-year-old man’s vehicle, which caused him to strike the rear of Dompierre’s vehicle, the tractor-trailer.

The 81-year-old’s Ford Focus driven was pushed partially under the tractor-trailer and got stuck.

Police said Valdivia Perez would be cited for following too closely.
