Miller Minutes: ‘Support the arts by attending events you wouldn’t normally’

Oscar-nominated actor Timothée Chalamet committed a major faux-pas last week when he said he was glad he wasn’t part of dying art forms like opera or ballet because “nobody cares.”

As you can imagine, this resulted in an internet fiasco from the arts community (and possibly contributed to his Oscar loss this past Sunday).

While opera and ballet are considered “high art” and deemed inaccessible to some, they are the foundation for modern performance art as we know it. Music, dance and theater students are required to learn both as part of their training, and for good reason: they are difficult to master technically and promote discipline and health. It takes skill. Probably more skill than Mr. Chalamet’s ping-pong movie required (which didn’t win a single Oscar, by the way).

Needless to say, this was an ignorant remark to make when movie theaters are closing left and right due to the rise of streaming services. And again, his movie was about … ping-pong.

Let us also not forget that, even if you know nothing about the arts world, you probably know the plot of “The Phantom of the Opera” — AKA, the most famous Broadway show (and an arguably super-famous movie and book) centering around a ballerina … in the opera.

Moral of the story: reject Chalamet thinking. Support the arts by attending events you wouldn’t normally. Art is only alive if you’re enjoying it.

Below is a list of events to get you started.
