Extra caution warranted as seasonal weather continues

While the season isn’t officially here, springlike weather is already upon us. That means fluctuating temperatures, varying precipitation and the high winds that go with those abrupt weather changes.

It also means people are taking advantage of any warm, sunny days to extend spring cleaning outside. While doing so, it’s important to keep in mind the risk of fires this unique time of year presents.

According to information released by the U.S. Department of the Interior, anyone considering starting a fire, whether to dispose of accumulated debris or simply to enjoy while spending time outdoors, should pay careful attention to the weather and watch for forecasts of high winds or dry conditions.

If you’re going to start a fire, the department recommends doing so far from anything else that could catch fire outside of the intended area for burning.

Fires should also never be left unattended and those burning them should ensure they have a ready way to put out them out. After burning, it is important to ensure the fire is completely out and “cold” to prevent rekindling.

The department also recommends people not start fires at all when it’s windy.

Even if you don’t intend to start a fire, it’s important to avoid actions that can start one by accident. Windy conditions can lead to an errant spark or bit of ash that would normally extinguish itself flaring into the beginning of an outright blaze. Exhibiting extra caution when disposing of burning items, such as ash from tobacco products; paying additional attention to where any sparks generated by other activities and refraining from fireworks use can help avoid unintended consequences.
