GoFundMe started for firefighter hit by car Friday
A GoFundMe created for the Oneida Valley Volunteer Fire Department firefighter who was hit by a car Friday, March 13, raised about half of its goal just hours after starting.
Mike King, a firefighter with Onedia Valley, was struck by a vehicle in the 800-block of Oneida Valley Road in Oakland Township Friday evening, March 13, while responding to damage caused by heavy winds in the area.
Butler County Emergency Services called Oneida Valley Volunteer Fire Company and Butler Ambulance Service to the scene around 5:30 p.m. Rob McLafferty, 911 coordinator for Butler County Emergency Services, confirmed Friday evening that a firefighter was struck by a vehicle, and that EMS on scene transported him to the hospital.
King is getting reconstructive surgery on his face, and he needs to have plates installed in his ribs, all of which are broken. He is being treated at Allegheny General Hospital, where he is in the ICU on a ventilator.
According to the GoFundMe, King faces a “long and uncertain recovery,” with an extended hospital stay and possible rehabilitation ahead.
The campaign has a fundraising goal of $4,500, which will help cover medical bills, rehabilitation costs and daily living expenses while King is unable to work.
