DEP provides funds for abandoned mine drainage treatment in county

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection is providing $15.2 million for environmental restoration to abandoned mines, including two in Butler County.

The department announced Thursday, March 12, that Stream Restoration Incorporated would receive grants for two abandoned mine drainage treatment systems in Worth Township.

Grant recipients will be reimbursed on project costs up to a set limit, the department said.

The company is expected to receive up to $455,718 for project planning and development along with an engineering design plan to develop a multiphased sludge management plan at the Big Run treatment complex.

It will also receive up to $213,504 for the Hamilton (McCaslin Road O&M) project, which includes water monitoring, engineering design and permitting for future maintenance and improvements to the treatment system.
