How Freeport’s Aiden Bauman reached 100 career PIHL points despite imperfect circumstances
The season didn’t turn out how Aiden Bauman hoped, but the Freeport hockey senior forward will remember it for the career objective he was able to cross off.
In the Yellowjackets’ penultimate game, he reached 100 career points.
“We’re typically a school that’s not very successful in hockey, so it makes it a little bit more special,” Bauman said.
Bauman, who was a captain for the Yellowjackets, entered the season aware of what he needed to reach the milestone. He accomplished the feat on an unassisted goal against Richland.
“We were in the offensive zone for a while,” Bauman said. “They just kinda threw it up the wall, I grabbed it and it was just a shot from the top of the circle.”
A teammate grabbed the puck for him, but facing a deficit, he was focused on trying to make a comeback rather than celebrating.
Bauman netted two goals in the 5-4 defeat, then another pair against North Catholic in Freeport’s season finale. He finished with 102 career points.
Freeport failed to notch a win in regulation in 17 games this season, only posting victories in a shootout against Meadville in its opener and in overtime against Montour two games later.
The program’s future is in doubt.
“There’s kids at our school that play hockey and chose just not to play on the varsity team this year, so I hope they play next year so that the kids who were on the team this year that aren’t graduating can keep playing, because those kids all have potential just like I did.”
Bauman finished the campaign with team highs of 20 goals, 14 assists and 34 points. He also plays for the Pittsburgh Vengeance of the PAHL.
Bauman plans on attending California (Pa.) and might play on the Vulcans’ club team in the future.
