For Slippery Rock’s Zac Turberville, tough road at PIAA wrestling championships ends just shy of medal

Slippery Rock’s Zachary Turberville fell to Bishop McCort’s Melvin Miller by a 26-10 technical fall in a 160-pound quarterfinal bout on Day 2 of the PIAA Individual Wrestling Championships on Friday, March 6, 2026, at Hershey's Giant Center. Rob McGraw/Butler Eagle

HERSHEY — Zac Turberville’s only two matches of the day were arguably the toughest two-match stretch anyone in the field faced.

The Slippery Rock senior 160-pounder was knocked out of his first appearance in the PIAA Individual Wrestling Championships on Friday after consecutive losses to Bishop McCort’s Melvin Miller (26-10 technical fall in the quarterfinals) and Faith Christian’s Shane Wagner (10-4 decision in the consolation third round).

Respectively, they are the Nos. 1 and 7 wrestlers in the state in Class 2A, per Inside Pa. Wrestling, and Miller is a Virginia Tech commit and two-time state champ.

“It’s kinda been my whole career, unfortunately — haven’t gotten the greatest draws ever,” Turberville said a few minutes after his high school career came to an end with a 128-39 record.

It also didn’t help Turberville was battling what he thinks is a left MCL injury, which he said he suffered in last week’s state regional tournament. He said it caused sharp pain up his leg when it was pulled inside by an opponent and made lateral moves to his right difficult.

But that’s not an excuse to him.

“I didn’t go to a doctor out of fear they’d say I couldn’t wrestle,” said Turberville, adding later he thinks he’ll be OK in a few weeks. “Unfortunately, it’s not 100%, but it’s alright.”

Turberville came into the tournament ranked No. 6 in the state at 160. He beat Canton’s Carson Rockwell in Thursday’s first round 4-2 to make the quarterfinals.

He’s the first Rocket to make the trip to Hershey since 182-pounder Vito Pilosi in 2020. He was close to becoming the first medalist since Kaleb Kamerer (182) finished seventh in 2019.

“I’m happy with (my season),” Turberville said. “Obviously, a really sour taste there (at the end).”

“Overall, fantastic season this year, fantastic year for the school,” Slippery Rock head coach Denton Zeronas said. “No matter who he was up against … never shied away from going out, trying to get the job done, wrestling to the best of his ability.

“I wish I could have 10 more next year of him.”

Turberville is hoping to wrestle in college after this season.

Miller advanced to Friday night’s semifinals, where he’ll face Berks Catholic’s Layden Acevedo. Wagner advanced to the consolation fourth round.
