Mars swears in Snavely as new council member

Tables action on emergency management coordinator

MARS — Mars Council is back at full capacity after swearing in its third new member of the year.

Borough officials swore in new Councilwoman Jana Snavely during a meeting on Monday, March 2.

Snavely succeeded Christina Clutter, who stepped down from borough council in January after decades of service after being appointed as the borough’s new secretary and treasurer.

While it’s her first venture into local government, Snavely said she’s excited for the opportunity.

“My family and I have lived here for 24 years and we just really, really like the community,” she said. “I wanted to serve the community and just kind of give back because we love the area so much.”

In her professional career, Snavely works as a full-time music teacher at Eden Christian Academy in Pittsburgh.

She said she hopes to use some of that experience in her new position.

“I’m excited to be able to do whatever I can to help improve the community and give ideas that can better improve the quality of life for people,” Snavely said. “I like networking with people. I feel like now I have an opportunity to get to know more people in Mars and that could really help me going forward.”

Tabled Ordinance

Officials also tabled an intergovernmental emergency cooperation ordinance with Callery. The move would allow the two boroughs to share an emergency management coordinator, according to Clutter.

Since it’s a volunteer position, adopting the ordinance would not come at any cost to either municipality.

Clutter said Butler County asked each municipality to sign a cooperation agreement to establish an emergency management coordinator who would help lead response efforts in the event of a disaster.

The borough will advertise the ordinance in the coming weeks and plans to vote on it at an April meeting. Callery is also expected to advertise the ordinance, with a vote expected later this year.
