Butler city police warn of possible skimming incidents

Butler city police put out a warning for residents to be careful after receiving reports that a card skimmer may have been used at the DG Market on Main Street to defraud customers.

Police received complaints recently from residents that EBT cards were compromised and the charges out of their accounts today trace back to the eastern side of Pennsylvania.

The complainants all used their cards at the store on Main Street in Butler and there may have been a skimmer in use, a news release said. Police said that does not necessarily mean the fraud originated from the store.

Police said if anyone made a purchase at the store within the last 48 hours, they should check their accounts and EBT cards and ensure they were not compromised.

They should report this to Butler city police if they have losses. They should also contact the companies their cards are from and banks if they were compromised and put an alert on their account.

Police said anyone who suspects their EBT card has been compromised should contact the welfare office.

According to an email from police, the welfare office stated the EBT app enables people to lock their card both from out-of-state purchases and from purchases in general. They recommend people keep their card locked if they’re not currently using it.
