PIAA wrestling regionals: Butler’s Sloboda and Stoner, Slippery Rock’s Turberville, SV’s Hornick win medals, state berths
Butler’s Santino Sloboda won his third straight PIAA Class 3A Boys Individual Wrestling West Regional tournament title Saturday at Canon-McMillan High School.
The Pitt commit and No. 2 wrestler in the state at 127 pounds, according to Inside Pa. Wrestling, beat Trinity’s Dom Canali 7-0. It’s the second straight win in a week for Sloboda over Canali.
Sloboda (43-1 this season) won his first two matches Friday by technical fall and pin, then won his semifinal Saturday morning 8-0. He now is 171-8 for his career and could foreseeably break the Butler County all-time wins record next week when he heads to Hershey’s Giant Center as a favorite to claim his first state title in the PIAA Individual Wrestling Championships, which begin Thursday.
Classmate Sutton Stoner, who last week finished eighth at districts and one spot out of a regional berth before an injury to a wrestler ahead of him created an opening, bounced back in a big way.
The senior 160-pounder ran through the blood rounds with two pins, a 12-5 decision and a disqualification by West Mifflin’s Cooper Dietz in the consolation semifinals to make the third-place bout against Norwin’s Jack White. Stoner forfeited the match to finish fourth.
Mars came up just short of sending two wrestlers to states. Olympic Serrao (139, No. 17) lost on a last-minute takedown by West Allegheny’s Thomas Bencho (No. 14), 6-5, to finish sixth and one spot away from going to Hershey. The same happened to classmate Parker Joseph (133), who lost to Central Mountain’s Patrick Tarantella (No. 9) 1-0 on a second-period escape to finish sixth.
Seneca Valley junior Riley Smith (107, No. 19) just missed a PIAA berth, losing to West Allegheny’s Michael Johnson (No. 9) 11-4 in the fifth-place match for the final spot.
Raiders teammates Zach Hill (145) and Tommy Wuycheck (285) were knocked out in the second and third round of consolations, respectively. Wuycheck was a win away from being in contention for a regional medal and shot at states.
Slippery Rock’s Zac Turberville (160 pounds) lost to Bradford senior Jordan Thompson in the final at Sharon High School. Thompson, an Edinboro commit, is ranked No. 3 in the state while Turberville is sixth.
With the 9-5 loss that gives the senior regional silver, Turberville will make his first trip to the PIAA championships next week. He had never medaled at regionals before this year.
Turberville trailed 6-1 after two Thompson takedowns in the first period but fought back with a takedown of his own in the second.
After winning his quarterfinal Friday, Tuberville edged out Clearfield’s Colton Ryan (No. 14) in the semis by a 6-4 decision thanks to an escape and takedown in the third period.
Seneca Valley’s Hannah Hornick will make the four-hour trip to Hershey, as well, after finishing fourth at the girls west regional Saturday at Mt. Lebanon High School.
The senior 190-pounder, ranked eighth in the state, was pinned by Peters Township’s Liliana Giulianelli (No. 12) in the second period.
SV’s Kaeleigh Tuell (148) and Adele Shih-Calabraro (112) were pinned in their consolation second round matches to end the season.
Butler will not be sending a wrestler to the state championships. Monica Osborne (235) lost her consolation second round match Saturday against Saegertown’s Kaylee Stampin-Williams by pin. And former state qualifier Anastasia Manchester (136) came up a win shy of a top-four spot and PIAA berth, losing to Greenville’s Kelley Enterline (No. 4) 4-0 in the third round of consolations.
Knoch’s Braylee Ireland (118, No. 13), who won bronze at the state championships a year ago, will not get a chance to match her feat after suffering a 4-1 loss in the consolation semifinals against Ringgold’s Mia Scalise. One more win would’ve secured Ireland one of the four spots the west regional sends to Hershey.
Teammate Kenna Watson was knocked out in the consolation semifinals by Mt. Lebanon’s Carly Jox.
Slippery Rock sophomore Sophie Hensel was knocked out in the 112-pound consolation second round by Pine-Richland’s Ava Diulus 7-4.
North Catholic sophomore Michael Pierro (121 pounds) was knocked out in Saturday’s consolation round of eight by Central’s Carsen Mowery at Altoona High School.
