ICE is breaking the law in some cases
In a letter published Feb. 7, (“Trump making good on campaign promise,” Page A4) Carl Jones claims that U.S. Immigration and Custom Enforcement’s heinous actions are justified because the immigrants they are targeting did not go through the “proper channels.” This is false. One such legal channel is the asylum process. Five-year-old Liam Ramos and his father are in the USA as part of that legal process. Yet ICE arrested and imprisoned both father and child anyway, in violation of the law.
The Ramos family is just one of many examples where immigrants are following the law, but the government itself is breaking it. Shouldn’t we “law-abiding people” protest when our government breaks the law?
Carl feels that this administration’s detractors don’t really care about undocumented immigrants; they will simply always protest no matter what the President does. I feel that the president’s supporters don’t really care about following the law; they will simply never oppose anything that President Donald Trump does, no matter how cruel or illegal. I would love to be proved wrong.
