Neubert: Thaw out with North Park’s Spring Thaw races this weekend

Spring Thaw celebrates a milestone at 50 years.

The event in North Park, which will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, is the longest continuously run event in Western Pennsylvania.

Spring Thaw was created in the first running boom of the ’70s to offer local distance runners an opportunity to qualify for the Boston Marathon. Local marathoners Tom Abbot and Harry Kucherer created the 1st Annual Boston Qualifier Marathon, which had 24 finishers. By 2000, participation swelled to more than 200.

The event evolved into Spring Thaw and is no longer a full 26.2-mile marathon, but it offers plenty of choices with 5, 10, 15 or 20 miles in consecutive loops of North Park Lake. The 5-mile distance was added in 2023 and has become the second most popular choice behind the 10-mile which routinely sees more than 200 finishers.

In 50 years, Spring Thaw has only had three race directors: Mark Courtney, Kevin Smith, and since 2020, Matt Imhoff.

At its peak in the mid-2000s, Spring Thaw saw participation numbers over 1,000. Imhof expects registration may reach its capacity of 600 by Saturday. All registrations are online at runsignup.com/Race/Events/PA/AllisonPark/TheSpringThaw until race day. There’s also registration and packet pickup 4-7 p.m. Thursday at Pro Bike+Run in North Park.

Spring Thaw runners in all distances receive a finishers’ medal and long-sleeved T-shirt. Those who complete 10, 15 or 20 miles also earn socks. All finishers can also enjoy coffee and the event’s traditional post-race hot soup in the Rose Barn.

To commemorate 50 years, the top three overall men and women in all distances and first masters in the 10-mile earn specially designed acrylic plaques based on the original race flyer. Top three in age groups from 19-and-under through 70-plus in all distances also earn awards.

All runners start together at North Park Boathouse and follow a counterclockwise loop around the lake. Marathon Pacing will offer race pacing from eight-minutes-per-mile through 12-minutes-per-mile. There is a cutoff of four hours for all participants.

There are three aid stations on each loop with Gatorade and water. The aid station at the start area will also stock GU energy gels for 15- and 20-mile participants. As with other GCXC managed events, headphone use is regulated. Strollers are welcome to participate but dogs are not. (Contact the race to make accommodations for service dogs.)

Imhoff advises runners and spectators to carpool on race day as parking near the start is limited to 250 spots near the Rose Barn and small lots along Pearce Mill Road. Shuttles will run from the North Park Swimming Pool area.

Spring Thaw has supported various charities in its history.

This year, participants and others are encouraged to donate to 412 Food Rescue. This Pittsburgh-based charity was founded in 2015 to prevent food waste by connecting extra food with people who need it. It’s grown into the country’s largest food rescue organization with more than 23,000 volunteers.

Find out more at 412foodrescue.org or donate to Spring Thaw’s goal of raising $1,500 at runsignup.com/Race/Donate/PA/AllisonPark/TheSpringThaw.

Not everyone is ready to challenge the distances of Spring Thaw, especially as we emerge from a punishing winter. Imhof invites runners and walkers of all ages and abilities to his next North Park event, Shamrock Run at 9 a.m. March 7.

Shamrock Run is lighter on mileage, heavy on fun with a 5K Run, 1-Mile Run/Walk and Kids Dash (less than 100-yards,) all staged from North Park Boathouse.

Wear your seasonal green and your festive face. Take home a Shamrock finishers’ medal and custom Shamrock socks. runsignup.com/Race/PA/AllisonPark/ShamrockRunNorthPark
