Seneca Valley boys lose, North Catholic girls win WPIAL 3rd-place games ahead of PIAA tournament: Roundup

Enzo Khalil’s 24 points simply overpowered Seneca Valley, as No. 3 Central Catholic beat the fourth-ranked Raiders in Wednesday’s WPIAL Class 6A third-place game.

The Raiders had clinched a PIAA tournament berth already by making the consolation game. They will play the District 3 third seed in the first round of states March 7 at a site and time to be determined. The brackets will be released Sunday.

Owen Congdon and Ryan Priester each had 14 points for SV, and Andrew Omasits added nine. Congdon scored 10 of his points in the first half, and Priester sank four 3-pointers.

North Catholic 70, Deer Lakes 66 — North’s Jude Rottmann ended a No. 13 Lancers run in the fourth quarter that briefly saw them lead 66-65 after trailing by 11 when his three-point play with 21 seconds left put the No. 2 Trojans back up 68-66.

Rottmann finished with 16 points. Jason Fredericks led NC with 20, and Brandon Pickett added 14. The Trojans will face the District 10 runner up in the first round of the PIAA tournament March 6.

Girls basketball

North Catholic claimed bronze for the second straight year in WPIAL Class 4A, beating fifth-seeded Elizabeth Forward 49-40 at North Catholic High School.

The No. 3 Trojanettes’ top scorer was Harmy Jones with 11 points. They trailed EF by two entering the fourth quarter but held the Warriors’ to just four points in the fourth quarter.

The Trojanettes will play either the District 6, 8 or 10 champion in the first round of states March 7 at a site and time to be determined. The brackets will be released Sunday.
