Police closed Interstate 79 Friday for crash prior to fatal pileup, cited icy conditions
About two hours before an at least 25-vehicle pileup on Interstate 79 Friday morning, Feb. 6, state police had closed a different portion of the highway after a car crashed into a snow embankment because of icy conditions.
State police said a Toyota Corolla was traveling north on I-79 at around 8:25 a.m. Friday, and slid on ice while negotiating a right curve near mile marker 94 in Muddy Creek Township. The car then traveled into a snow embankment and rolled onto its roof.
The crash caused “heavy disabling damage” to the car, but the air bags did not deploy, police said.
Both lanes of I-79 north were closed “briefly” so the vehicle could be towed and he Pennsylvania Department of Transportation could de-ice the road.
The driver, Grace Kidd, 20, of Pittsburgh, was evaluated by EMS at the scene but not severely injured, according to the late Sunday police news release.
Portersville EMS and Harmony Fire District also responded to the scene.
Later along the northbound lanes of I-79 in nearby Jackson Township, an 18-year-old Slippery Rock student died in a series of crashes that police also attributed to icy roads.
