Extreme cold warning stretches to Sunday

With temperatures expected to feel as cold as -25 degrees over the weekend, the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh has issued an extreme cold warning stretching through the weekend.

According to meteorologist Matt Brudy, a cold front will sweep into Butler County on Friday evening, Feb. 6, plunging temperatures toward a low of about -2. The front will be accompanied by high winds expected to bring scattered snow and drag wind chills even lower.

“We will see some scattered snow squalls tonight, probably from around 7 p.m. to about 1 a.m. These come with sudden drops to visibility and quick accumulation,” he said.

The snow overnight will be the majority, if not all, of the precipitation the county will see over the weekend. However, with wind chills, he said it could feel as cold as -25 overnight into Saturday.

As a result, the service has issued an extreme cold warning from 1 a.m. Saturday until 10 a.m. Sunday.

“On Saturday, we won’t see much relief. The high temperature will be in the teens, but with wind chills it will still feel like it’s in the negatives,” Brudy said.

By Sunday morning, he said winds are expected to relax, allowing temperatures to climb back to a high in the teens.

The weather service is expecting an end to cold temperatures later next week, with a high of 29 predicted for Monday and 39 for Tuesday and Wednesday.
