A homeless man accused of threatening the president, law enforcement and others after his experience at the July 13, 2024, rally where an assassination attempt targeted now-President Donald Trump waived his preliminary hearing Thursday, Feb. 5.

David James Stewart, 36, was charged Jan. 29 with felony terroristic threats following alleged posts on X and YouTube where he threatened officials and law enforcement.

District Judge Kevin O’Donnell reduced his bail from $500,000 to $250,000. He also ordered Stewart to undergo mental health and drug and alcohol evaluations.

According to an affidavit in the case, Stewart began commenting on posts via X related to the assassination of Charlie Kirk before he branched to posts from elected officials, law enforcement and government accounts. The charging document details messages posted by Stewart from Jan. 10 to 23.

Among those threatened were Trump; the White House; U.S. Rep. Mike Kelly, R-16th; and state police’s Troop D, including calling a bomb threat in to the state police barracks in Butler Township.

In the affidavit, police noted how Stewart had attended the July 13, 2024 campaign rally for Trump. Police said Stewart alleged he was threatened by police at the event and afterwards.

Stewart is being held in Butler County Prison. His formal arraignment is scheduled for 1 p.m. March 24 in Butler County Common Pleas Courtroom 5.
