Naomi Venesky powers Karns City girls basketball over U/ACV and closes in on 1,000; Moniteau girls roll: Roundup

Naomi Venesky scored 12 points in the first quarter and finished with a game-high 20 to lead Karns City girls basketball over Union/A-C Valley 53-21 Wednesday night.

Venesky’s second straight 20-point night propelled her to within three points of 1,000 for her career. She will likely cross the mark Friday at home against Brookville.

Hanna Daily added 12 points for the Gremlins, 10 of them coming in the third quarter.

Moniteau 64, North Clarion 49 — Alyssa Thompson got hot from 3-point territory, sinking five from distance to finish with a game-high 21 points in the Warriors’ win. Maddy Dehart had seven points, all in the first half, and eight rebounds for the Falcon Knights.

Emily Matz added 13 points and Sayge Brunst 10, and both made a pair of 3s. Matz finished with a double-double with 11 rebounds, plus five steals. Thompson added seven boards and three steals, and Brunst had seven boards and five assists.

Swimming

Mars swept Butler in the pool 95-86 (girls) and 92-53 (boys) in one of the final dual-meets of the regular season. The Planets girls got two wins from Kendall Stewart in the 200-yard freestyle and 100 free, and the boys got double winners from Patrick Quinn (200 and 100 free) and Dom Davis (50 and 500 free).

Boys wrestling

Santino Sloboda got a first-period pin over Enzo Incorvati at 133 pounds, but Butler lost to Moon 49-23 heading into the weekend’s Pine-Richland Ram Duals.

The Tornado won four weights, all by bonus points. Sullivan Stutz (127) and Mason Swidzinski (145) earned pins, and Sutton Stoner won at 160 by technical fall.
