Remote learning a safe option, even when weather iffy

All nine school districts with Butler County footprints closed or moved to remote learning Monday and Tuesday, Jan. 26 and 27.

Most followed that trend for the rest of the week, and some decided Wednesday that Thursday and Friday classes would move online.

The decision to close school for a day is sometimes an easy one — especially when the area receives the second most snow accumulation since 2000. What’s more difficult is calling off school several days in a row, even when the ground is still covered.

It seems parents understand the decision in most cases.

Sarah Huth, a Moniteau parent with two sons in the school district, said she appreciates a remote learning setup, mainly because of the safety it helps promote.

“I don’t think anyone anticipated a week of remote school, but I'm grateful that keeping our kids safe while they continue to learn is the district’s priority,” Huth said.

Now that remote learning is not only possible, but a feasible option to keep students’ minds active while at home because of weather, administrators may be more likely to call off in-person classes.

Snow days might be tough for parents or guardians of children to plan around, especially when they are announced the morning of, but when it comes to the safety of children getting to and from their school, it’s worth it. No one wants to risk a crash with a child or children in a vehicle because of treacherous road conditions.

Remote learning seems to be a viable substitute for the students themselves, who get to spend the day at home instead of in a classroom.
