Butler man charged in Salvation Army burglary

A Butler man accused of stealing thousands of dollars from the Salvation Army in Butler and Fairground Market in Prospect had additional charges filed against him after police found the same vehicle was used in three burglaries.

Erik Stephen Cupps, 37, was charged Thursday, Jan. 29, by state police with one felony count each of burglary and criminal trespass and one misdemeanor count each of theft and receiving stolen property following the Dec. 14 incident.

The alleged Dec. 14 burglary was the second of three burglaries Cupps has been charged in at the two locations.

Police said they responded to the Salvation Army on Dec. 16 for reports of a burglary. They found someone had forcibly entered the building on Dec. 14, broken open a safe and stolen $1,148 and two sets of keys.

Police used security footage from surrounding businesses to identify the vehicle that was likely used, as well as its owner.

Police spoke with the owner of the vehicle on Dec. 19 and were told Cupps also has access to the vehicle.

The woman told police she and Cupps were at a residence in Butler during the time of the incident, but police said her vehicle was seen on security footage in the area around the time of the burglary.

Cupps previously had charges filed Jan. 9 and 14 related to alleged burglaries on Jan. 1 and May 13, 2025, at Fairground Market. Police said Cupps admitted to the three burglaries when interviewed.

In the Jan. 1 incident, police responded to Fairground Market for a burglary and found about 20 lottery tickets had been stolen. Police tracked the stolen tickets and determined someone attempted to cash them later that day at 3B’s Tobacco in Butler Township.

Cupps was charged in the incident with felony burglary and misdemeanor theft.

In the May 13 incident, police responded to Fairground Market for reports of a burglary. They said they saw on surveillance cameras a man, later identified as Cupps, take two cash registers containing around $1,000 from the market’s office.

He was charged in the incident with one felony count each of burglary and criminal trespass and one misdemeanor count each of theft and receiving stolen property.

Police said they spoke with the owner of Fairground Market and found Cupps was employed there and was fired for stealing.

Police executed a search warrant Jan. 9 on a Butler residence and found the clothes Cupps was reportedly wearing in at least one of the burglaries.

Cupps’ preliminary hearing in the Jan. 29 charges has yet to be scheduled. Both previous preliminary hearings were waived.

Cupps is being held in Butler County Prison. Bail is listed in two cases at $75,000 and $50,000.
