Butler’s Carter Ekas climbs program record books in 400 as boys sprinters medal at SPIRE meet: Roundup

Butler boys sprinter Carter Ekas ran 49.17 seconds in the 400-meter dash Saturday at the SPIRE Ohio Preview meet, posting the second fastest indoor time in Butler history.

In other boys action, Jason Wick came in fourth in the pole vault in 13-6. Isaac Miller’s 50.95 in the 400 to finish fourth is also Butler’s fifth fastest time in the event.

Eli Campbell came in third in the triple jump with a 40-5. The 4x200 relay claimed silver in 1:29.90, just .41 seconds behind winner Speed University Track Club, the 4x400 finished second also behind Speed with a 3:24.96 and the 4x800 relay took third out of five teams with a 9:06.41. Ekas teamed with Deacon Simko, Isaac Miller and Kevin Shriver on the 4x2 and 4x4 teams

On the girls’ side, Gracyn Vardy won bronze in the high jump with a 5-1. Halle Swidzinski came in fifth in the pole vault with a 10-6. The 4x800 relay team earned bronze in 10:28.74.

Girls wrestling

Anastasia Manchester won third at the North Allegheny Invitational on Saturday at 136 pounds, leading Butler girls wrestling to a 13th-place finish with 78 points.

Manchester beat General McLane’s Ariana Fiscus 9-3. Monica Osborne (235) and Brin Zehmisch (118) each lost their bronze-medal matches.

Boys basketball

Farrell 68, Slippery Rock 38 — Luke Caldwell led the Rockets with 11 points, and Frank Campagna added nine in the loss. Both had a pair of 3-pointers.

Avella 74, Summit Academy 42 — Khalil Ollie scored a game-high 27 points in the Knights’ loss.

Girls basketball

Slippery Rock 47, Greenville 40 — Brielle Jordan scored a team-high 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds in the Rockets’ victory.

Madison Romanovich chipped in 13 points, seven rebounds and five assists in this one. According to the team, she now has 502 career boards and 199 career dimes.

Union/A-C Valley 52, Curwensville 21 — Maddy Dehart had a mammoth all-around game, scoring a game-high 24 points while grabbing 18 rebounds for a big double-double.

That was not all, as the senior also swiped seven steals and dished out four assists. Raelynn Fletcher chipped in 15 points on three 3-pointers, adding six boards, and Jaleigh Hall snagged 10 boards to go along with four points.
