Butler to shift snow focus to problem roads, intersections
After several days of digging out of the snow, Butler Mayor Bob Dandoy said there is still a lot of work ahead as the city’s streets department shifts its focus to areas of concern.
“I know it wasn’t perfect. I know there is still a lot to be done, especially in the neighborhoods; but as we get back in there now, it’s starting to happen,” he said during a city council meeting Thursday, Jan. 29.
During the initial snowfall Sunday, Dandoy said all five of its plow trucks were staffed and operating for 24 hours straight. After a break, crews were back to it on Tuesday and have been every day since.
He added the department prioritized certain roads due to their importance, such as Brady Street’s access to Butler Memorial Hospital.
After snowfall stopped, the city contracted Wiest Asphalt and Paving to haul out snow from Main Street and the surrounding business district. The total cost of the contract is yet to be determined, as it is on an hourly basis.
Councilman Troy Douthett said a discussion was held on whether to have Wiest do more work in the neighborhoods, but it was ultimately decided the streets department would attempt to take care of problem areas by itself first.
“We’re going to try and handle that ourselves first and see how far we get,” he said. “We have to cut (areas) back.”
Dandoy thanked Douthett and the streets department for their continued work over the week and through however much lies ahead.
