Restaurant Week worth braving the cold for

The opportunity to try a taste of what the county has to offer with a side of promotional deals and flavors is passing fast.

Now in its fifth year, Restaurant Week in Butler County, which actually spans 10 days this year, is set to end Sunday, Feb. 1.

It’s an unfortunate example of ill fortune that the biggest snowstorm to hit the county in years happened to strike in the midst of the annual promotion.

Heavy snows, varying road conditions and the bitter cold conditions that set in on the heels of the storm make it easy to find reasons not to go out. And where safety is a concern, staying home is the smart thing to do.

However, the inclement weather is all the more reason to show support for local eateries, if you can safely do so.

Like any business during a spell of particularly bad weather, restaurants tend to suffer a steep drop in the number of patrons willing to brave conditions to visit them.

Additionally, businesses in the service industry also tend to face a downturn in business immediately after the holidays.

Those circumstances provide a unique opportunity for those who can safely head out for a meal.

Not only can people take the opportunity to broaden their culinary horizons at an establishment they may not have visited or with a menu item they may not have tried — all with the added incentive of special prices, special menu items and the chance to win prizes through a giveaway being held by Experience Butler County — they can help county small business owners at a time they could use a boost.
