Butler boys basketball in precarious playoff position after loss to Woodland Hills, but girls get win: Roundup

With a 60-52 loss at Woodland Hills on Wednesday night, Butler’s WPIAL boys basketball playoff hopes took a hit.

Stainton Forbes poured in a team-high 23 points and Andrew Gettinger added 13, and the Golden Tornado (6-11, 4-7 in WPIAL Section 1-6A) led by two points entering the fourth frame.

Five teams from the nine-team section make the WPIAL playoffs.

Girls basketball

Emily Hoffer paced Butler with 10 points as the Golden Tornado downed Woodland Hills 50-13. Mark Maier’s team improved to 10-8 overall with a 3-4 mark in section play.

Slippery Rock 63, General McLane 53 — Despite a 24-point effort from Madison Romanovich, Slippery Rock fell short on the road. Brielle Jordan chipped in with 15 points in the loss.

North Clarion 51, Union/A-C Valley 35 — Maddy Dehart had 25 points and 15 rebounds in the defeat. The Falcon Knights fall to 6-11 on the season.

Oakland Catholic 48, Knoch 20 — The Knights could only manage nine first-half points in the loss, which dropped them to 3-15 overall and 3-6 in section competition.

Neah Ewing led Knoch with 10 points.

Bowling

Thanks to a 575 series and a 269 game by David Fisher, Butler’s boys bowling team beat Freeport 5-2. Matt Black added a 571 series. The Yellowjackets’ Christian Como had a 589 series.

Freeport (girls) 7, Butler 0 — Hannah Windows rolled a 744 series and a 279 game for the Yellowjackets. Kaylee Kniess led the Golden Tornado with a 493 series and 173 game.
