First, let me say, in complete agreement with Jill Mick, what happened to Renee Good should never have happened.

In her Jan. 18 letter to the editor, (“Left-wing leaders instigating protests,” Page A4), she observed there were no protests when Presidents Obama and Biden deported illegal immigrants. (I, for one, am glad she did not call this group of humans “illegals” as some people are wont to do).

What Ms. Mick failed to acknowledge is the growing numbers of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Minneapolis; the weaponization of the Department of Homeland Security. The number of ICE agents far exceeds the number of Minneapolis police. There was no mention of the U.S. citizens, including babies and children, being terrorized by poorly trained ICE agents. No mention of ICE doing things that real law officers know not to do — such as firing a gun into the face of a woman in her car.

The willful ignorance of those who are supporting ICE’s actions is concerning.

My parents fled Nazi Europe, separately, with their families.

We must defund ICE before we become a national police state.
