Kittanning man charged in bar fight outside Clearfield Township tavern

A Kittanning man is facing charges after a fight involving three men and a woman broke out in the parking lot of a bar Jan. 9 in Clearfield Township.

Wyatt Allen Birch, 22, was charged Tuesday, Jan. 20, by state police with two misdemeanor counts of simple assault and four summary counts following the incident at County Line Tavern.

Police responded at 8:50 p.m. for reports of a fight, but the incident was over, with one person already gone, when police arrived.

Police spoke with Birch and a woman he was with on the scene. Police said Birch was “heavily intoxicated,” appeared “disheveled” and had red marks and cuts on his fists.

Birch told police he was in an argument with another man and they “both pushed each other first,” police said.

Police then spoke with two bartenders who said the physical altercation between two men started on the tavern’s back patio. Bystanders broke up the altercation, and the two men went to the front of the bar and began fighting again. Police said the woman Birch was with was struck in the face and had a lip injury from the incident.

Police later viewed security footage that showed Birch and the other man pushing and punching each other while a third unknown man and the woman attempted to separate them. Police said the video shows Birch pushing the woman to the ground, then the confrontation between him and the man resumes.

Police said the video then showed the man punching Birch before he falls to the ground, then Birch got back up and reengaged the man and the third unknown man. All three then fell on the ground and continued fighting, police said.

When the three men got up, the unknown man attempted to stop Birch while the other in the fight walked away, police said. The unknown man then pushed Birch against a wall and Birch began punching him. The unknown man then punched Birch in the face numerous times before a group of people exited the bar.

Police later spoke with the man involved in the initial altercation. He told police he was celebrating a friend’s birthday at the tavern when he saw Birch being aggressive toward the woman he was with. He told police multiple people were upset with Birch and told him to stop.

The man then addressed Birch, which led to an argument, police said. The man said Birch threw the first punch. The man then tried to get Birch to leave the tavern, and the altercation ensued.

The man told police Birch punched him multiple times and bit his forearm during the altercation.

Police determined Birch was the aggressor, and the others involved in the incident were not charged.

Birch’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for 8:50 a.m. March 10 before District Judge Lewis Stoughton.
