PennDOT fixing train tracks on Butler railroad
Millions of dollars will be spent rehabilitating railroad infrastructure, including on a line that runs through Butler County.
On the Pittsburgh and Shawmut Railroad, which ends near Freeport, PennDOT will spend $3.1 million to rehabilitate about 20 miles of track on the Laurel Subdivision.
Funding will go toward work on an additional 6 miles of track, installing two switch machines and improving a grade crossing in the Butler Yard, according to a news release.
The project is part of $53 million being spent by PennDOT on 30 rail freight improvement projects. They are funded through the Rail Transportation Assistance Program and the Rail Freight Assistance Program.
Pennsylvania has 65 operating railroads, which is more than any other state in the nation, according to PennDOT.
