Time capsule: Evans City line dancers step to the music
Sue Weaver, program manager at the Lutheran Service Society, said the Evans City Senior Center line dance sessions began at the center in March 1977. She said benefits for seniors stepping to the music include improved balance and coordination, increased strength and activity level and socialization.
“It’s fantastic,” Weaver said in January 2012. “They’re glowing while they’re doing it.”
Dorothy Morris has been dancing at the center since 1986, and then became a co-instructor.
Morris said the center started with clogging classes, then moved to line dancing. She said at its peak in participation in the 2000s, the line dancing team performed at adult day care facilities and events such as the Evans City Oktoberfest.
“It’s good exercise, and it’s beneficial mentally because you have to learn and remember the dances,” Morris said.
