Moraine Elementary moves to flexible instruction day amid heating concerns
Students at Moraine Elementary School will learn via a flexible instruction day Wednesday, Jan. 21, after issues with the school’s boilers and heating system caused “unsatisfactory” temperatures the day before.
While the students learn remotely, the Slippery Rock Area School District superintendent said technicians are on site today, and he hopes to have the school open for in-person classes again tomorrow.
“Most of the rooms are in the comfortable range, but still not enough that we feel acceptable to bring students and staff into the buildings today,” superintendent Alfonso Angelucci said in a message to parents about Wednesday’s change.
On Tuesday, the school’s principal, Kristie Shulsky, sent a message to parents via the ParentSquare app stating the building was cool and asking parents to make sure their children dress warmly.
District parents said Tuesday the school building was roughly 60 degrees. Outside temperatures were in the single digits and low-to-mid teens Tuesday.
“I want to apologize to our Moraine parents, our staff and especially our students for the unacceptable temperature of the building today,” Angelucci’s said in a Tuesday email. “I feel confident that the measures that have been communicated to me today will help to ensure that this does not happen again.”
