Miller Minutes: ‘Let’s start a fashion revolution’

Miller Minutes with Butler Eagle reporter, Molly Miller

While I’m debating what color scarf to wear into the icy wastes, Jennifer Lawrence is wearing sequined gowns and high heels as she steps out of her limousine at the Golden Globes.

Why am I comparing my attire to that of a huge movie star? Because it’s award season, my friends. Which means hundreds of people around the world get to find out what movies were worth their time and which ones were not.

I find Hollywood red carpet attire fascinating because it reminds me of a time when people used to dress better. Stars like Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe would not be caught dead in some of the garb you see on the street today. You know what I’m talking about: the terrible paparazzi photos of people in sweatpants that don’t match, and which have never been sweat in.

To put this into a more local perspective, I’m always hearing stories from those in generations above me at Butler Little Theatre about how stepping out to One Howard St. used to be an event. It’s almost Gatsby-esque: the parties were longer, wilder and better attended. In my limited experience, I found COVID-19 diminished a desire to go out (and go out in style) as we once did.

Yes, it is freezing cold outside, and yes, not everyone has access to a little black dress. But wouldn’t it liven up these dull winter months if we got gussied up and went to a local restaurant to hear a band, the theater or the museum? Who cares if people think you’re overdressed; they’re underdressed! Carpe diem! We’re just as good as those Hollywood bozos!

To prove it, wear your best (or warmest, or most appropriate) attire to the following events. Let’s start a fashion revolution.

Friday

Win big during bingo night at St. Wendelin School, 211 Saint Wendelin Road. Starting at 7 p.m. Friday, take your pick of game packets ranging from $5 to $20, chow down on dinner for $10 and participate in raffles. For more information, visit the event Facebook page.

Hear the hits of the ’80s at “Dueling Pianos: Cold War Sessions” at 7 p.m. Friday in Penn Theater, 149 N. Main St., Butler. This event will feature pop ballads, rock riffs and singalongs for ages 15 and up. Tickets start at $35. Visit thepenntheater.org for more information.

Saturday

Identify winter trees on a guided tour of either Succop Nature Park, 185 Airport Road, Penn Township, or Buffalo Creek Nature Park, 154 Monroe Road, Buffalo Township, this Saturday. Both tours cost $6 for Audubon members and $10 for nonmembers, and will offer valuable information on the flora and fauna of winter. Please wear appropriate attire for wet conditions. Succop’s tours run from 10 a.m. to noon, while Buffalo Creek’s run from 2 to 4 p.m. Visit aswp.org for more information and registration.

Children in grades one through six can stretch their imagination at a Lego tournament in Old Union Presbyterian Church, 200 Union Church Road, Adams Township, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. The $8 pays for your child’s lunch and entry. This event is about making something from nothing; no kit designs! For more information about judging, categories and to sign up call 724-538-8672 or visit OldUnionChurch.com.

Boogie down at line dance night Saturday in the Saxonburg Fireman’s Club, 155 Pittsburgh St. Doors open at 7 p.m., dancing starts at 8 p.m. for a $5 cover charge. This event is for people 21 and older. For more information, visit the event Facebook page.

Take a self-guided tour of winter trees every weekend until Feb. 1 at Jennings Environmental Education Center, 2951 Prospect Road, Brady Township. The route contains some steps and uneven terrain, but is generally easy. For more information call the center at 724-794-6011. Email jenningssp@pa.gov for an electronic version of the walk.
