James Cooper

Cooper

James Cooper, 80, of Butler, passed away Sunday, Jan. 4, 2026.

He was born in Butler on Sept. 22, 1945, to the late Clair and Lucille (Oesterling) Cooper.

A man of few words but deep character, James was known for his calm presence and steady kindness. His soft-spoken nature was paired with a strong commitment to family and community. He retired from Armco Steel in 2003.

James has a long connection to Butler sports as both an athlete and a volunteer. As a defensive end in football, “Big Coop” was a co-captain, received the Jim McDowell Award, and accepted a scholarship to the University of Georgia.

James volunteered with the Midget Football League for 18 years, coaching, officiating, serving on the board of directors, and even functioning as its president. He also participated in the Butler Basketball Boosters for over 20 years. Jim was inducted into the Butler County Sports Hall of Fame in 2015.

Above all else, James was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

One of James’ greatest pleasures was camping in the Allegheny National Forest with family and friends. Late-night torch walks and back-country Jeep rides highlighted many of their camping adventures in the north woods.

James is survived by his sons, Stephen (Mimi) and Justin (Jessica) Cooper. He will be lovingly remembered as Papa by his beloved grandchildren, Adrienne, Bryce, Skyler, Alyson and Zoe.

Along with his parents, James was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Janet Craig, their marriage was a testament to love, respect and partnership. They were the best of friends and profoundly supported one another.
