Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission opens historical marker nominations
The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission has opened the 2026 nomination cycle for the Pennsylvania Historical Marker Program, inviting residents and community groups to help highlight stories that shaped the commonwealth ahead of America’s 250th anniversary.
The program, which features more than 2,500 blue-and-gold markers across all 67 counties, commemorates people, places and events that reflect Pennsylvania’s role as the “Keystone of American History.”
A required pre-application is due April 1, allowing staff to review historical significance and eligibility before nominees submit final materials. Final applications are due June 1.
Nominations may be submitted by individuals, historical societies, nonprofits, local governments and community groups. Proposals are reviewed by an independent panel of historians and approved by the commissioners.
Program details and application guidelines are available at PAHistoricalMarkers.com.
