Miller Minutes: ‘Make a resolution which reaches beyond yourself’

I’d like to meet one person who makes their New Year’s resolution a serious habit.

Call me cynical, but I find myself motivated toward the beginning of the year, and later resigned to the assumption I can never change. This doesn’t mean I don’t try to set some goals. Reading goals, fitness goals, intentions to practice music and theater aspirations always bounce around in my mind.

But it was only upon recent reflection that I realized that the resolutions that stick most often revolve around others, not ourselves.

When I set my mind to bettering my relationships, I follow through. When I resolve to show up at the theater as a teacher or set-builder or see a friend’s band perform, I always succeed. I’m learning the best resolutions are those that better the world around you. The warm, fuzzy feeling that accompanies their accomplishment pushes you to get more involved.

So, I encourage you to make a resolution that reaches beyond yourself. Volunteer to help run the lights or sound at a theater event, or donate your time to a museum or creative organization. Start giving music lessons, if that’s your gift, so that the next generation can be inspired by you. Long story short: give back to the arts, you won’t be disappointed.

In fact, you can start this weekend!
