ADAMS TWP — Hundreds of students from Mars Area Primary Center rang in the new year with their own version of the Times Square Ball Drop on Monday, Jan. 5.

A glittering, silver ball descended down from the rafters to a spirited countdown highlighting a day filled with holiday-themed games and activities for students in kindergarten and first grade.

“Sometimes winter break can be a long time for our students to be off of school and so we just like to have the celebration as a positive experience to welcome them back,” principal Jessica Semler said.

Students also walked down a red carpet in the gymnasium to show off their new outfits following an extended break.

“It’s nice being back, but I do miss the weekends,” said first-grader Wyatt Zimmerman, who noted he spent the holiday watching college football games with his cousins.

Another student, Milo Winovich, said he enjoyed the countdown as the new disco ball dropped in the gym and added his family had their own unique celebration to mark the turn of the year.

“This New Year’s, my mom taped party cups to a fan and my dad stuffed them with confetti that we cut up and when it was time we were running in circles underneath the fan with all of the confetti,” he said.

As for the educators at Mars Primary Center, Semler said they’re always trying to enhance student experiences as the calendar flips.

“We’re always reassessing and asking for feedback for the events we do because we want to make it even better than the year before,” she said. “We just want this place to be a positive environment for all of our students.”
