Ohio man found in apartment attic of dead Butler man
Police found an Ohio man with firearms and controlled substances living inside the attic of a dead man’s apartment on New Year’s Day in Butler, according to charges filed Friday, Jan. 2.
Butler police were dispatched to a home on Walker Avenue for reports of a man who died in a residence. The man’s sister found him and notified authorities. When officers responded, they found a Youngstown man in the attic, police said.
Jamal Abdoul Finley, 48, was charged Friday with three felony counts of possession with intent to deliver controlled substances, two felony counts of prohibited firearm possession and one misdemeanor count each of drug paraphernalia possession and marijuana possession.
Officers cleared the apartment and found Finley sleeping on a mattress in the attic, which had been converted into a bedroom. Police said Finley had active warrants and was found with two bags of suspected marijuana nearby. Police said Finley also had $632 and a cellphone in his possession.
Police later executed a search warrant on the attic bedroom and found multiple hiding places. In one area, police found a zippered black container with a built-in combination lock. The container had a loaded .40-caliber semi-automatic handgun, a 9 mm semi-automatic handgun with no serial number, 14.5 hydrocodone pills, a digital scale with white residue, $35 and multiple men’s wristwatches.
Police also found a knotted plastic bag concealed in the far wall of the attic containing about 34 grams of suspected crack cocaine, about 14 grams of an unknown substance, 1 gram of suspected fentanyl and about 3.5 grams of suspected marijuana.
Police also found a fake Diet Coke can with an interior container and multiple boxes of sandwich baggies.
Downstairs, police said on a coffee table near the dead man’s body, they found two burned glass smoking pipes, two burned spoons and a small container with a white crystalline substance.
Finley’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for 11 a.m. Jan. 12 before District Judge William Fullerton.
