Parker City in Armstrong County is ready to welcome hundreds of daring cold-weather swimmers for the annual Parker Polar Plunge on New Year’s Day.
Registrations commence on-site at 9 a.m. at the Parker City Boat Launch on North River Avenue, with the plunge taking place at 1 p.m. Mayor Bud Amsler estimates in a typical year between 250 and 300 people register to brave the cold temperatures and plunge into the frigid waters of the Allegheny River.
Amsler said the New Year’s tradition is the busiest day of the year for the small town.
“It’s a busy day for all the restaurants and bars in the city,” Amsler said.
