Seneca Valley girls basketball hands Johnstown 1st loss; Butler’s Sloboda, Stoner win at Southmoreland: Roundup
At the Shady Side Academy Holiday Tournament, Seneca Valley received a combined 29 points from Reece McFadden (15) and Makayla Canty (14) in a 45-41 defeat of Johnstown.
Senior center Nalonai Tisinger sank 18 points for the Trojans (8-1), who took their first loss of the season.
SV improved to 5-5 with the win.
North Catholic 52, Berlin Brothersvalley 49 — At their own holiday tournament, the Trojanettes (6-3) rallied by outscoring the Mountaineers 16-9 in the final quarter.
Lauren Reitz tallied a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds to spark the victory. Brady Wehner paced North in scoring with 17 points.
Bryn Prosser’s 18 points led a trio of Mountaineers scoring in double digits.
DuBois Central Catholic 55, Moniteau 39 — Charlotte Thompson’s 14 points and 16 rebounds were not enough to lead the Warriors to victory at the Indiana Tournament.
Maddy Eury added 11 points for Moniteau, and Emily Matz had 11 boards before being named to the all-tourney team.
Southern (Md.) 58, Mars 40 — Alexis Cashdollar continued her personal hot streak with 25 points, but the Planets’ comeback attempt fizzled with an 18-7 deficit in the final period at the Deep Creek Lake Holiday Tournament.
Mya Moore chipped in 10 points for Mars (2-7).
Freeport 65, Clarion-Limestone 46 — No other details were available from this win for the Yellowjackets (6-5), who have alternated between wins and losses in all 11 games.
Karns City 52, Grove City 15 — Naomi Venesky scored 12 points and Hannah Summerville 10 as the Gremlins (6-0) crushed the Eagles.
Lakeview 56, Slippery Rock 31 — Madison Romanovich scored 11 points for the Rockets at the Lakeview Holiday Classic.
North Catholic closed the first half on a 19-3 run to bury West Mifflin in a 98-55 win at the Gateway Holiday Tournament.
Jason Fredericks dropped a career-high 37 points for North (8-3). Brandon Pickett scored 27, Jake Olkawski 14 and Jude Rottmann 14.
For West Mifflin, Julian Dewberry tallied 27 points.
Karns City 62, Union 44 — The host Gremlins received a big game from Cole Johnston, whose total of 20 points included four 3-pointers. Teammate Xavier Bartoe hit a pair of treys and finished with 12 points.
Jackson Renwick tallied 14 points for the Golden Knights.
Saint Cloud (Fla.) 74, Mars 73 — The Planets were edged at a tournament in Tampa, Fla., despite 27 points from senior forward Ben Detisch, who tallied 10 points in the fourth quarter alone.
Nick Santoro netted 16 for Mars (6-5), and Austen Wroblewski added 11.
Seneca Valley 57, Palmetto (Fla.) 52 — No other details were available from this win in Florida for the Raiders (5-5).
Butler finished second at the two-day Southmoreland Holiday Classic thanks to a pair of championship performances.
Santino Sloboda, a Pitt commit chasing the Golden Tornado’s all-time wins record, beat West Allegheny’s A.J. Snatchko by technical fall 17-2 for the title at 133 pounds. At 160, Sutton Stoner also won by tech fall, 17-2, over Freedom Area’s Brayden Reynolds.
Butler finished with 152 points, trailing only West Allegheny’s 210.5.
Sloboda went 4-0 with a pin and three tech falls, and Stoner went 5-0 with two pins and two tech falls.
Five Tornado wrestlers finished in the top five, with Ben Kinney (107) and Sullivan Stutz (121) taking fourth after losses in their third-place bouts, and Nick Savannah (127) claimed fifth after pinning Fox Chapel’s Luke Kurshinski.
