Number gaffe can’t stop Andrew Gettinger, Butler boys basketball in win over Woodland Hills
BUTLER TWP — Different number, same numbers.
When Butler boys basketball star Andrew Gettinger was announced at the end of the starting lineup Tuesday night, he was wearing No. 15 instead of his usual No. 35.
“I don’t know if he wants to admit to it, but it was an innocent mistake,” Golden Tornado coach Matt Clement said afterward. “It’s not one that’s gonna stick. I told him that after he scores 50, he might stick with it.”
Despite having to fend off Woodland Hills’ Scoop Smith, who’s headed to join the football team at Miami (Ohio) next month, Gettinger scored a game-high 21 points in Butler’s 60-54 home section win.
Gettinger tried to say he’d had a change of heart with his uniform before admitting he was joking. He’d never worn anything other than No. 35 in a high school game.
“I forgot it. I brought my blue one, and I didn’t realize until five minutes before the game,” Gettinger said. “I was stressing. I thought I was about to throw up in the locker room. I was so scared.”
Fellow senior Boden Lenyk added 14 points in the win, including the and-one basket that gave the Golden Tornado (4-3, 2-2 WPIAL Section 1-6A) its first lead after falling behind 7-0 and the bucket that stretched his side’s lead to 13 with 2:41 to go in the first half.
Jace Gratzmiller and Mavrik Clement, the coach’s son, also chipped in.
“It was about Jace, Boden and Mav contributing with Stainton (Forbes) and Getty,” Clement said. “It’s always gonna be Stainton and Getty, but having those other three contribute (24) points makes their life a lot easier. Getty and Stainton, they blocked shots, they protected the rim, they rebounded really well, and that was the difference in the game.”
The visiting Wolverines (6-3, 2-2) used an 11-1 run that bridged the second and third quarters to pull even at 29 points apiece 2:21 into the latter half. Butler led 42-33 at the end of the third frame.
Smith’s 12 fourth-quarter points kept the Wolverines within striking distance.
“He’s probably the most unique player that I’ve coached against in 17, 18 years,” Clement said. “I just told Getty, it’s a compliment to him that they put (Scoop) on him like that. ... Compared to the fall and into this (season), Getty’s ball-handling has gotten so much better.
“(Scoop) got a steal off of him, but he’s supposed to. He’s supposed to get a steal off of him every once in a while. He’s the quickest players that’s played in the WPIAL in both sports.”
Gettinger poured in 12 points in the second half, including a pair of crucial 3-pointers.
“It’s a tough battle, especially when I’m getting face-guarded by him,” Gettinger said. “He’s one of the quickest dudes in the WPIAL. I just tried to keep my composure.”
