Everyone gets in on the act as Butler girls basketball blows out Woodland Hills

BUTLER TWP — Everyone was able to join the party during what Butler coach Mark Maier said was the program’s widest margin of victory in memory.

Malina McElroy and Eva Stutz both posted 13 points, Katie Dick 11 and Jules Lockwood 10 as the Golden Tornado downed visiting Woodland Hills 75-16 at home in WPIAL Section 1-6A action.

The Wolverines (0-8, 0-3) watched their hosts race out to a 23-0 lead before getting on the scoreboard with their first shot of the second quarter. Butler led by 39 at the midway point, allowing Maier to get reserves into the matchup.

“You get a big lead, it is less pressure — big crowd because it’s a boy/girl doubleheader,” Maier said. “I wrote on the board, ‘We’ve gotta start quick.’ Because last week, at North Hills, we didn’t start quick. We got there late and all that.”

Eleven players scored for the Golden Tornado (6-2, 1-1), including bench players Payton Kamerer, Jordan Ryan, Jules Lockwood, Sydney Karenbauer, and Sofia Matonak.

“I like to cheer them on just as much as they cheer us on whenever we’re on the court,” McElroy said. “I think they all deserve the playing time they can get.”

“We played New Castle, and I think a lot of them played,” Maier said. “This one was a little more significant, where they got three or four minutes. I know Sofia got her first varsity point, and I know a couple got their first 3, so it’s good. And it also gets their attention. The same stuff we run in the JV game, we run in the varsity game, so you’ve gotta be able to execute.”
