Butler man accused of sexually assaulting teen in exchange for silence about child’s actions
A Butler man is accused of coercing a 15-year-old girl into sexual activity by threatening to tell her mother she was sneaking out of the house to see a friend, according to police.
Matthew Edward Wainwright, 36, was charged Thursday, Dec. 18, with one felony count each of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, aggravated indecent assault and corruption of minors, and misdemeanor indecent assault following a Nov. 6 incident in a West Wayne Street residence.
The girl told police on Nov. 5, Wainwright threatened to tell her mother about how she was sneaking out of the house.
On Nov. 6, the girl went to school and began receiving texts from Wainwright about whether or not he would inform her mother about her actions, according to an affidavit. Wainwright reportedly told the girl they would have an “adult conversation” when she returned.
Police said after school, the girl again began receiving texts from Wainwright. He told her he would not tell her mother about the teen’s actions and would give the girl money in exchange for sexual contact.
Police said Wainwright then sexually assaulted the girl for the span of an hour.
According to the affidavit, the girl told her mother following the incident.
Police said they were notified when a nurse from UPMC Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh called Butler police to inform them of the assault and a subsequent ChildLine report.
Police and county Child and Youth Services responded to the residence Nov. 7 for interviews and seized two cellphones related to the case. Another interview was conducted Nov. 19 with the girl at Children’s Advocacy Center.
Wainwright’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for 1 p.m. Jan. 5 before District Judge William Fullerton.
