Andrew Gettinger’s 30-point double-double drives Butler basketball’s win over North Hills
BUTLER TWP — Andrew Gettinger struck for 30. His Butler teammates helped him get there.
They all combined to produce a 66-53 WPIAL Section 1-6A boys basketball victory over North Hills in the Golden Tornado gym Tuesday night.
“I didn’t know he (Gettinger) scored 30 points, but I knew he had 10 or more rebounds because they were impactful,” Butler coach Matt Clement said.
The lead changed hands six times in the first half as the Indians (3-3, 0-2) took a 25-24 advantage into intermission. Gettinger stuck back an offensive rebound and converted a three-point play 32 seconds into the second half. Butler (3-2, 1-1) never lost the lead from there.
The Tornado took a 10-point lead into the fourth quarter, and the margin never slipped into single digits in the final eight minutes. The lead peaked at 66-48 when Mavrik Clement sank a free throw with 42 seconds remaining.
He tallied seven points, nine rebounds, three assists and two steals on the night.
“No, I don’t feel like I need to score,” Mavrik said when asked about Butler’s offense. “My job is to do whatever I need to do to help us win. A big part of that is getting the ball to Stainton (Forbes) and Andrew.
“They’re our big scorers. I need to help get them in position to do that.”
Coach Clement said Mavrik, Jace Gratzmiller and Boden Lenyk fit those roles. Gratzmiller had three assists, Lenyk two assists and two steals in the contest.
“Mav loves the game of basketball,” Clement said of his son. “He knows his limitations and is physically strong enough to battle through. He’s watched his brothers play here, seen a lot of Butler basketball and loves doing battle on the court with his friends.
“All of these guys are that way. I’ll say this for our locker room. These guys care a lot.”
Gettinger had 12 rebounds to go with his 30 points. Forbes produced 16 points, seven rebounds and three assists while Cael Hanley drained three 3-pointers and netted 10 points.
“There’s a lot of ways to contribute to a win. It’s not just points,” Gettinger said. “A rebound, a steal in a key spot ... all of those things are important. It was great seeing so many guys pitch in tonight.
“I thought everybody played well.”
Gettinger sank four treys in the game and scored 14 of the Tornado’s 20 points in the third quarter.
“Once I see that first shot go in, I want a lot more of them to go in,” Gettinger said. “I do get into a rhythm that way. I think most scorers do.”
North Hills started five juniors. Nate Schanbacher led the Indians with 20 points. Max Piekarski tallied 12 points and 12 boards, but fouled out with 5:04 left in the fourth quarter. Jackson Long had 10 points, five rebounds and three assists.
North Hills coach Buzz Gabos could not be reached after the game.
“I didn’t know how we’d do with a 10-point lead into the fourth quarter because we haven’t been in that position this year,” Coach Clement said. “I’m proud of every player we put on the court tonight. We played solid ball at both ends.”
